You're right that fetal age is a couple weeks behind. That's because the "40 weeks" starts from you last period, which means that there really is no baby until about 2 weeks after, around when you ovulate and egg meets sperm. :) But babies are considered ready to go anywhere from 38 to 42 weeks, like Eag923 mentioned, though basically they've only been alive 36-40 weeks. I had my boy via c section at 41 weeks and he was still normal size (7lbs 14 oz) and will be going in for a planned c section with this baby at 39w 2d. My dr said he wouldn't be surprised if new baby is only slightly smaller than my son, because at that point they ready to born, just waiting for mommy to deliver them.

Babies are full term any time from 38-42 weeks, with your due date being the mid point (40 wks). They schedule the c section at 39 wks bc they are trying to avoid you going so far that you'll go into labor on your own. Babies born at 39 wks do just fine!
