Q: Can a contraction feel like cramps with no tightening?

I am now 38W and 4 days. I've been having cramps all week but I notice no tightening. I've read that contractions feel like a tightening or that your stomach should feel hard. I do not feel this but just cramping. Could this be the start of something?

Its started as tightening for me, braxtons even and then went to pain in my front and back that came in waves a bit like the braxtons. Coming then fading at 5 mins from the very start, I expected at least a large gap that would shrink to 5-3 mins but nooooo. In between times I was fine and felt no pain at all. Over the course of 20 hours they got worse and worse but everyone is so different it can feel different to different women.

My contractions felt much more like really really bad period pain. I didn't even notice the tightenings.

To be honest, I remember waiting for tightening and I never felt it. It was just cramps I had coming and going consistently and getting worse as time wore on. I am sure there was tightening, I just couldn't feel it. I also never felt Braxton hicks at all before then. I think it's possible you could be feeling something, but if it's not getting worse and it goes away when you move around then I would think it's just your body "practicing". Good luck, hope you get to meet your baby sooner than later!
