Q: Have any of you ladies had an early scan to be told a miscarriage, and found a baby at a later scan?

I had a 6 week scan last week, and nothing was found on the u/s. my OB pretty much said I'm too old to carry a pregnancy, and said i'd miscarried, and pretty much told me to call him back to get a D&C.

Obviously I was distraught as i had a mmc just 5 months ago. I've done a bit of research and found he shouldn't have made a diagnosis until I'd been scanned at 8 weeks or more I was very backed up (constipated tmi) and i have fibroids also which i have read can obscure the the view..

I still have all my symptoms too..I'm just wondering whether or not any of you ladies out there have gone through the same thing and found a baby at a later scan, or if you know of anyone who has?

I guess i'm just trying to find a glimmer of hope x

Geez, sounds like you went to my last doc, I got about the same horrible treatment. Absolutely keep getting weekly scans and blood draws and don't make any decision on a d&c unless they can absolutely confirm its not a viable pregnancy. 6 weeks is still quite early. I had my first scan at 8 weeks, only a yolk sac was seen. Went back a week later, saw a tiny fetal pole but no hb, by 10 weeks the fetus only measured in at six weeks and still no hb. It was confirmed and I m/c on my own naturally. It sucked, but I have the comfort of knowing that the baby was definitely not progressing. I am 38 btw and not too old :)

Girl, I'm praying and have all my fingers and toes crossed for you! If your gp will do a blood draw sooner than the other doc, I would go for it just to see the differences in those numbers as well. Plus, the sooner you know for sure, the better! Good luck and let us know how it goes if you are able to.

Def agree with everyone- get a second opinion or get your current doc to do more tests. blood draws are a good, less invasive way to confirm what is happening. Ultrasounds are great but as PP said, usually more beneficial at or after 8wks. I'm glad that they've agreed to do more at this point. Best wishes moving forward!!

i had two draws in weeks 4 and 5.. levels were doubling every 51 hours so within healthy time frames. he won't do a draw until my appointment on the 12th feb. i wonder if i should go to my gp and get one a couple of days before that...

If I were you the first thing I would do is get your levels checked - that would give you a definitive answer and your question would be answered. From what you said you had an hcg draw, are you having another in a couple days? That's my suggestion. Best of luck to you...

I'm almost 42.. I rang the hospital earlier asking for a second opinion, they called me back and arranged a hcg draw and repeat scan for next thursday...its my hubbys birthday...I wonder if i pretty much ovulated later than normal, and for some reason the view was obscured by fibroids and jam packed intestines etc.
last week the OB refused an hcg check saying i didnt need one and a scan would be the best way forward.. so when nothing was found on the scan he called me to say there was just what looked like a small mass of 'tissue' way in the back of my uterus.. and to arrange a D&C no further testing. I guess when i asked for a second opinion today he changed his tune.

Firstly I've had 4 m/c's in 12 months after seeing HB and 3 d&c surgeries. So I'm sorry your going through this.
You are not too old have you had your overian AMH test done to check to egg reserve etc.
You should not be having a d&c at 6 weeks it's bit necessary a d&c is to remove retained product so if there is only a empty sac or nothing why on earth would they put you through surgery when it's a suction blind procedure and nothing to remove. Bleeding should occur and a natural m/c should be left to occur if infact you have m/c. At 6 weeks it's too early to make that call. I'd go for a second opinion at 7-8 weeks then if you don't see a sac yolk sac heartbeat it would become a negative outcome.
I wish you the best of luck. But your not too old unless they're run tests and checked your eggs and quality. Xx

I have not had this happen to me but I would also look for a 2nd opinion. I am not sure how old you are but it seems pretty crappy (for a lack of a better word) that your OB would say you are 'too old' and dismiss you. If you haven't had any bleeding or cramping or any other reason to believe that you have miscarried, I would also get a second scan in a couple of weeks before scheduling a D&C. Best of luck!

If I were you I'd be looking for a second opinion - asking for a confirmation ultrasound or asking for blood draws to check what your HcG levels are doing.

For my first MMC (which we lost around 6 weeks and didn't find out until around 9 weeks), I had a second ultrasound a week after the first one to confirm that the baby was gone and that my dates were just not off. During the week between ultrasounds, I had my HCG levels tested every 2 days to see what the levels were doing. They didn't want to confirm either way until they were sure that the baby was gone - especially when at 6 weeks it's not always possible to see a heartbeat, etc.

Good luck and I hope everything works out for you!!!!

Was your ultrasound internal or abdominal? I didn't see my babe until nearly 8 weeks, and even then it was teeny tiny. I don't have any personal experience with this, but my first reaction is that it was just too early to see anything yet. Praying it all works out for you, I know this has got to be stressful!
