RSV :(

The last week has been hell, plain and simple. I took the kids from Wisconsin to South Dakota on 3/18 to surprise my grandparents, who hadn't had a chance to meet Nina yet. The plan was to stay a week and make it back in time to spend Easter with my in-laws. The trip went swimmingly, Nina slept great and got lots of cuddles with great-Nina and Max was in heaven in rural SD, the land of 'dump dumps' (pickup trucks). On Thursday Nina seems excessively sleepy but I didn't worry until evening when she threw up all over me. I took her temperature, which was 100.6, just high enough at her age that the nurse on call suggested we head to the ER. After an unnecessary and absolutely traumatizing blood draw, they did a nasal swab and diagnosed her with RSV. Since she as breathing well with 100% oxygen saturation, they sent us home and suggested we monitor her and head home as soon as possible to be bear our own doctor. We gave her a day to rest (and for me to catch up on som sleep after a night in the ER) and left Saturday afternoon for home.

She did great the first half of the trip, but when untried to wake her to eat in Waterloo, Iowa she became inconsolable, refusing to nurse and breathing heavily. When I noticed she was retracting we headed to the local ER, where she was still sating at 100% and had a clean chest x-ray. We stay d a harried night in a hotel, finally making it home Sunday afternoon. After a few hours at home, she again became inconsolable and was struggling to eat and slimed a temp of 103. After 4 hours of non-stop crying, we brought her into the ER again, where the amazing pediatric ER docs finally recognized how labored her breathing was despite her perfect oxygenation, and she was admitted to the children's hospital.

After a couple of scares and almost-transfers to the picu, Nina turned the corner yesterday and is off her oxygen and IV fluids after 3 nights in the hospital! Hoping to go home today if she can start eating a little better (she's only eating once every 12 hours right now, which is obviously not ideal). A very scary time and not how we wanted to spent her 2-month birthday, but so grateful that she's on the mend. Max has been a trooper through this very tough week, and loves getting to play doctor on his hospital visits... He makes a pretty awesome big brother!

Poor little Nina but from the picture, it looks like she has a great "doctor'! I hope she continues to improve! Will be sending my positive vibes.
