12 week appointment and NT scan!
By stephc2010 » Posted Oct. 27, 2015 11:36pm - 217 views - 5 comments

My 12 week appointment was yesterday, with my NT scan today!

12 week appointment was standard and the midwife found the heartbeat no problems, but baby kept wiggling away and she had to chase after him or her to get a reading lol! I never met this midwife during my last pregnancy since she's a newer midwife... I see a group of 6 midwives (and they have OBs in their practice, too. But I only see the midwives). They take shifts working in labor and delivery, so you never know who will be working when you're ready to deliver, so they make sure you meet them all multiple times. Anyway, this new midwife was nice! I really liked her. She supports co-sleeping, which is a big deal to me! I've never really met a medical professional who has encouraged me to keep co-sleeping and nursing my daughter to sleep every night. I'm all for doing what's best for your family, whether that's cry it out, co-sleeping, exclusively breastfeeding, exclusively formula feeding, baby wearing, attachment parenting, etc., etc.! It's nice to get that reassurance, especially on something so frowned upon. It made me feel good about myself and the choice I made. Sorry, I tend to get passionate about things like these, lol.

My NT scan was great, for the most part! Everything looked perfect and I always love seeing the baby on the screen! I invited my mother-in-law to come along and she was disappointed that it wasn't the gender scan! -_- She also kept asking question after question after question... I guess she hadn't been to an ultrasound appointment when my sisters-in-law were pregnant a few years ago... I felt like she was annoying the ultrasound tech because the ultrasound tech kept having to repeat herself. It was seriously like "What's that there?" "what's the average heart rate at this stage?" "Can you tell the gender?" "Wait, where are the feet?" "And the hands?" "Why do you measure the fluid behind the back of the neck?" "You said you're looking for a nasal bone, what does it mean if you don't see one?" and on and on and on. I understand that they are for the most part, valid questions... But my goodness, I couldn't enjoy it! I felt bad for the poor ultrasound tech... My mother in law even asked "is that the TEETH forming right there?!" after the ultrasound tech pointed out that baby was practicing swallowing. And when the ultrasound tech said "no, it's not", my mother in law said, "Oh, it is?!" She apparently has selective hearing or something... My word... lol. I'm debating not having her in the delivery room this time... Last time she really ticked me off, I'll probably explain that some other time... lol. Anyway, the nurse said her guess on gender based on nub theory is a girl! We'll see if we decide that we're going to find out for sure in a few weeks!

I feel like this journal entry has gone on long enough... Sorry for the rambling! If you've read this entire journal entry, thanks for sticking around! =P I've also posted the ultrasound pictures in the gallery. This entry has the picture of the one that the tech based her nub theory off of! What do you think? Hope all of you ladies are doing great!

My mother in law was asking valid questions for the most part, but she just gets on my nerves when I'm pregnant, lol!

And the "nub" part on this picture is right by the end of baby's belly that's a thick white line sticking straight out. Apparently if it's a boy, it's at or greater than a 30' angle from the spine, where a girl's is usually straight in the same direction of the spine. It's obviously not 100% accurate, but I read somewhere that it's around 80% accurate at 12 weeks. I read it on the internet, so it has to be true ;) I'm anxious to find out for sure! I hope my husband still wants to find out when it comes time for the 20 week scan!

Agree with Cattsmeow, it's amazing to have someone who strongly supports your decisions for pregnancy and family! So many people, doctors especially, that aren't like that. What a great pictures and your MIL was asking all the questions I would be thinking :) I hate to pester the tech so I always just kept quiet even though I wanted to know everything!

Glad your appointment went well today! That was very nice of you to invite your MIL to the scan. I had my own mother in the second scan I had at 21 weeks. I think she really enjoyed it. I have no idea about the nub theory though, haha.

I'm glad your scan and appointment went well! It is always amazing when your caretaker supports the decisions you make for your family. I'm sorry your MIL was being annoying with the questions. She sounds just like my oldest son whenever we take him to ultrasounds. (We try to include our 2 sons with anything baby related so they don't feel left out. I have an ultrasound today and it's the first one they are not able to come to.) And I am clueless when it comes to the theories to determine boy or girl. lol. I guess I don't have the eye for it.
