Meal planning?
By stephc2010 » Posted Jan. 14, 2016 5:29pm - 400 views - 8 comments

Does anyone here meal plan for the week? I'm really trying to be more organized and save money whenever I can... Usually I never have a plan for dinner. With my husband's work schedule, I just have to worry about feeding me and Allison (unless our schedule is flipped and we're waking up and going to sleep the same time my husband is). When I go grocery shopping, I always just buy a bunch of random things, most of which I never end up using and it gets thrown away. We currently eat a lot of soups and easy things to make like spaghetti-os and frozen meals. I try to give Allison plenty of fresh fruits and veggies, but I feel like her meals are really lacking in nutrition! :(

Anyway, I'm planning on spending the next few days searching on Pinterest for tips and different recipes (I'm not the best cook and my husband is pretty picky). Any advice from those of you who meal plan? Or have any yummy recipes you'd want to share? Crockpot meals are awesome if you have any! I also want to make some freezer meals closer to my due date so I can actually TRY to eat once this little girl makes her arrival :)

Hopefully making a plan for breakfast, lunch and dinner each week will help cut the cost we spend on eating out... It gets out of hand pretty quickly!

I don't have a juicer! :( I've considered getting one, but we're limited on space.

Re the veggie waste. Are you into juicing at all? It's a great way to reduce the amount of veggies you discard, since you can just juice up the ones that are no longer as appetizing to look at :)

Thanks! I do have a few different cookbooks I could flip through! My husband is such a picky eater, so it's always tough finding things he'd like to eat. Early on in this pregnancy (before the all day sickness started), I did have cut up veggies in the fridge ready to go for healthy snacks. I definitely try to make veggies every day with each meal, and fruit with breakfast, etc. I'm just hoping that it'd be easier to grocery shop if I knew exactly what I needed instead of just throwing a bunch of junk in the cart. I waste so much veggies that way! I'm writing down different ideas for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks. I also got a new notebook to hopefully write out what I plan to make each day of the week! Hopefully I can stick with it :)

Doesn't have to be lacking in nutrition just cause it's frozen :) Not if you made it yourself and stocked the freezer anyway.

I know it sounds old fashioned, but really I'd advise you to buy a cook book. I find it's much easier to sit down and plan a week of meals if I have a cook book to shift through, rather than sitting at the computer finding recipes.

Also, if you're keen to get fresh fruit and veg with your food (which I can only agree with!) then stocking your fridge with containers of pre-cut vegestables really help make it so much easier :)

Thanks! I definitely use Allrecipes, but mostly for desserts and sweet things! =P I'll have to take a look at their lunch and dinner recipes! :)

One of my favorite crockpot meals that actually freezes well is salsa chicken. You add frozen (or fresh if you have less time) chicken and black bean and corn salsa to the crockpot for 6 hours on high or 8 hours on low. Five minutes before you serve it, add a package of cream cheese (hold off on this if you're freezing it) and let it melt. We put in on steamed cabbage as a wrap but not everyone likes cabbage. It falls apart though, it's so tender!
