Question About Cream Cheese
By SarahEMcCormick » Posted Aug. 14, 2015 8:34am - 285 views - 6 comments

So, this morning I went and stopped at my fave bagel place, called The Bagel Factory, here in Cape Coral. I love their homemade bagels and cream cheese. I ordered an everything bagel, whole wheat, with chive cream cheese. They make the cream cheese themselves, and they load it on. So GOOD!

Anyway, I got home and ate it and then it dawned on me.....

I ate homemade cream cheese. I don't know if its pasteurized or not. Now I'm a bit wprried. Should I be? I know cream cheese isn't necessarily a soft cheese per se, and is usually pasteurized...but I'm ocd about health, tbh I sort of have health anxiety, and I'm worried about Listeria now. Ugh!

Amanda: I buy the Organic Horizon DHA and AHA milk, but I've never had the cream cheese! I may have to give it a try! We don't have Inglls here, just Publix and Winn Dixie, so maybe we don"t carry it. I will keep my eye out!

Thank you all so much! You helped me to calm down. I found out from the bakery that they do use pasteurized everything. So, I think I will be a regular customer throughout this pregnancy lol This might not be a good thing!

Yeah, unless they're also milking their own cow or goat, it has to be pasteurized by law. I am addicted to cream cheese and it has only gotten worse since discovering Organic Horizon at Ingles...

You should be fine. In the US, they have to use pasteurized dairy. You would know right away anyway because your gut would explode. Not in the literal sense. You have to take in a lot of unpasteurized for it to affect your pregnancy and day after day. I used to freak out with Fresh Mozzerella but I found out that they have to use pasteurized milk. If you go to a farmers market and get Apple cider, that is usually unpasteurized because they squeeze the juice out the apple and they package it at that point.

I don't think you have anything to worry about. I can't imagine US restaurants taking the potential health risk of NOT using pasteurized milk for the ingredient. But if you're really worried, just call the restaurant!

Not sure about homemade cream cheese but I've been eating a lot of store bought cream cheese with bagels because it's something I crave, haha.
