Q: Sex in late second and third trimester-spotting

Maybe we got a little carried away but the first time I've ever had any spotting this whole pregnancy was after we had sex last night. It was a very small amount and there was nothing this morning and no cramps but it really freaked us out. We both did lots of research and apparently it's normal later in pregnancy due to the blood flow and all that. However, I am afraid to have more sex! And my husband keeps asking after every romp if the baby is moving so he's paranoid, too! My belly is starting to get in the way and it's getting a little awkward...anyone else go through this? I want to be able to enjoy my husband the rest of pregnancy but I really didn't like the spotting and the worry over the baby is starting to take the fun out of it. We will definitely take it easy next time...but it's turning out to be more of an adjustment than I thought it would be!

It might be normal but any bleeding or spotting should be reported to you OB or midwife and should be checked out just as a precaution.

Now is the time to try out all those new positions you've heard about! lol The cervix is a very vascular thing during pregnancy and any contact can cause little tiny blood vessels to break and give you some spotting. Totally normal. You can spot after a cervical check at the dr. too. Don't worry about it. There are lots of good books out there about sex during pregnancy, with suggestions about positioning and other things to help make it a little easier when your belly gets really big. My DH took it upon himself to do LOTS of research last time i was pregnant, and it did really help. We were able to keep at it right up to delivery. It does take some creativity though, but i just saw it as an opportunity to experiment and have fun with something we wouldn't be able to do for a while after the baby came. Go have fun! ;-)

I dont mean to give out tmi here, but my hubby and I have found that we really having sex in more cuddley positions now. on our sides with him behind me is infinitely more comfortable than anything we were previously doing, and somehow he manages to miss hitting my cervix that way too - which makes spotting and soreness really rare. Go get creative :) you might find something gentle that you guys really like and will take some of the pressure off.

Bleeding/spotting after sex during pregnancy is very normal because your cervix is engorged due to hormones, increased blood flow, pressure from the baby, etc. If it is a very small amt, and you're not having any other symptoms, I wouldn't worry about it - I know, easier said than done! As you move towards the end of pregnancy, you are going to find that actual intercourse really isn't all that fun anymore, so enjoy it now! :)
