Q: Calling social services on family. I need advice :( Part one

Here's the jist of it: My cousin is 19 & married to a 21 yr old with a history of drug/alcohol abuse. (They currently have a state issued breathalizer in their car even). Since they have a 2 month old now, I know social services has been involved -they came home with the baby & inspected the home. They use a pregnancy help center. So clearly they should know what's what. I have a 3 month old so we watched their little boy for a night & were pretty sad for the boy :( They told me when dropping him off that he didn't smile much & hasn't laughed for them at all. I held him for a while and it took him a LONNNNG time to warm up to me, & didn't get any sort of games at first, like they just don't play with him. But after an hour or so he was giggling lots :) But most importantly, we live in WI and it's been -15 to -20 degrees out for weeks... they brought him in a pair of socks, jeans, and a hoodie...............

Every baby is different, and taking a while to warm up to you doesn't necessarily indicate neglect. That said, if you have concerns, you must do what you feel is right for the child. I know it's a difficult situation when family is involved. Honestly it sounds like they don't know the best way to care for a baby. They are young, and might be making poor decisions. This MIGHT be improved upon with parenting classes or guidance.
My experience has taught me to go with your gut. If you have a nagging feeling something is not right you're probably correct. I hope things work out for the best for this sweet baby!
