Pregnancy rhinitis... Ugh!
By josamarie » Posted Dec. 3, 2015 7:16am - 309 views - 4 comments

I had it with Max but I don't remember it being this bad. I seriously cannot breathe, at all, out of my nose. There is nothing at all up there in the way of mucus, but I feel so stuffed I can't breathe. I usually can cope ok during the day because I stay too busy to think about it and can sip on plenty of water to counteract the dryness of breathing through my mouth, but I always feel a little short of breath and panicky about not being able to breathe through my nose.

At night, it's miserable. I can't sleep at all, and I wake up from whatever sleep I do get absolutely parched and in full panic because I can't breathe. I have tried every single thing out there from medications safe in pregnancy to natural remedies, and the only thing that helps is decongestant spray, which you can't use for more than 5 days in a row. I'm in day 5, tried not to take it last night at all and ended up getting 2 hours of sleep. I honestly don't know how I'm going to make it through another 8 weeks, I'm seriously going to lose my mind!

Anyone have any magical tips or tricks to help? I've tried pseudaphed, benedryl, Claritin, neti pot, vaporizer, humidifier, drinking more, drinking less, essential oil diffuser, saline spray, steamy showers. So far the only things that help are cold walks (and then I'm even stuffier after I warm up) and afrin, which I'm scared to keep using.

I know I must have had it pretty bad with my son because it was using a too-cold neti pot that triggered my first really bad panic attack with him, i really just forgot how much it sucks! So now I have all sorts of horrid anxiety around stuffy noses. I've always been panicky about not being able to breath out my nose, and the lug tissue damage I have from my PE compounds that a little because I feel like my left lung never fills up enough, so this just adds on top of that.

I use a mix of eo brands, but I'll definitely look into doterra, the peppermint bead sound like they might help. Some days I feel like I should just eat a big chunk of wasabi, that always clears my nose up, I've said it half joking but maybe it's worth a try!!

I'm right there with you! It sucks so bad. I have also tried almost everything you have tried. Honestly, mine seems to be worse when I'm awake than when I'm sleeping. But it makes me feel so panicky and on edge. I don't remember this with either one of my girls, but my belly didn't get as big and my lungs weren't as squished. That probably helped a lot. Sometimes I'm concentrating so hard on breathing that it starts to give me headaches.

I had this my entire pregnancy. I am a person who never has congestion or a stuffy nose unless I am sick, so dealing with it for 9 months really sucked! I found a lot of relief with simply saline. it would really help when I used it before bedtime.

You mentioned that you used essential oil diffuser, I don't know which brand you use but we use doterra and I found a tiny bit of relief by applying their breathe mix directly on the skin under my nose and inhaling the scent straight from the bottle. They also have these little peppermint beadlets which you place into your mouth, when they break open they clear your sinuses really quickly.

Ugh...I feel your pain. I had that so bad when I was preggo with DD. I would wake up feeling like I couldn't breathe etc. talk about panic! And dang...I have nothing to add to the list of things you've tried...it sounds like you've tried everything I did too! Ugh - I feel so bad for you. Hopefully someone will have another idea for you!
