Welcome, Nina!

I got to the hospital for my scheduled induction at 3pm on 1/26. I was 1cm and 50% effaced, so they placed my first dose of misoprostal at 4:00 pm. Had some cramping but nothing that I couldn't cope with easily, so I wasn't honestly expecting much change, and wasn't surprised when they hacked me at 8pm and was still 1cm and 70% effaced. Had second dose placed at 8:30pm, and started having contractions 5 minutes apart right away. Only every other one was painful, so I didn't even realize that they were that close together until the nurse told me (awkward side note, the overnight nurse is a student at my old dance studio... It was admittedly a little weird having her check my hits out all the time, but she took really good care of me, though she was embarrassed that she didn't recognize me at first!). I was really disappointed when the doctor checked me at 12:30 and I'd only progressed to 2cm with no further effacement. The doctor decided that because I was having regular contractions at this point that we should just wait before a third dose and see what happened in the next couple of hours. I was starting to struggle with the pain but still felt like it was too early for an epidural, so got a dose of numorphan, which took the edge off and I managed to get 40 minutes of fitful sleep.

When I was checked at 2am I'd finally progressed to 3cm and 80%, so they decided to start pitocin. At 4:30am I was struggling hard with the pitocin contractions, so got a second dose of numorphan. Unfortunately that dose only lasted about 40 minutes, though I did sleep hard for that time. Labored through to 6:30, when I finally requested an epidural after no further progress. Got my epi at 7:00am and it worked perfectly! I was so itchy and having a hard time sleeping so was given a dose of benedryl and slept hard through the next 3 hours.

Doctor checked me at 11am and I'd finally progressed to 4cm and 90% effaced, and even though baby was at a -2 station my bag of water was bulging, so she offer d to break my water. Water broke easily at 11:20am, and at 11:30 I started feeling a lot of pressure. My nurse could see the pain in my face despite my epidural so she asked to check me... she immediately started laughing and said "There's her head!" I resisted the urge to push while the doctors came in and got set up. By 11:45 I was pushing, and 4 minutes later Nina burst forth into the world! I couldn't believe it!

She immediately began crying as they laid her on my chest, passing her apgar with flying colors and a 9 right away. Doctor stitched up a tiny tear while I held her, and we had our baby! I was able to hold her skin to skin for over an hour before they took her to the warmer for weight and length and to warm up a little bit, but had her back within 15 minutes.

Getting into labor with the induction was difficult, but I'm proud of myself for being able to hold out so long before getting my epidural, and I am so blessed to have experienced another short and beautiful final stage (I pushed for 10 minutes with Max!), I feel like I was born to birth these beautiful babies and I'm so proud of my body. Miss Nina looks so much like her brother, but at the same time she is so totally her own little person already. I had a hard time believing I could ever love another baby as much as Max, but my heart is so full of joy and love I feel like I'm about to explode!

We hadn't decided on a name, but the moment I held her I knew, I looked right at my mom and said "I think she's a Nina!" and she so definitely is! Now that she's here I can't imagine her as anything else, and I'm so proud to honor my gramma in this way! I FaceTimed her right away to introduce my big Nina to her little namesake, grandma started crying and then I was crying... It was such a special and beautiful moment and I'll never forget it!

Welcome, Nina! A beautiful name for a beautiful girl. If I were having a girl she would have been named after my grandmother, also :-)

Beautiful. I'm so thankful you had a good overall experience. Welcome, little Nina! We have two Ninas in my family, too, my sister and aunt. :)
